What is Financial Aid?
Financial aid helps cover the cost of college and comes from sources outside of personal
or family funds. A variety of aid options are available to make education more affordable,
including grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study opportunities. Financial aid
may be awarded based on financial need, academic achievement, or a combination of
both. Some types of aid—like grants and scholarships—do not need to be repaid, while
others—such as loans—must be paid back or earned through employment. Most U.S. citizens
and eligible noncitizens can apply for financial aid at the federal, state, or institutional
level. Your eligibility and award amount are determined by submitting either the FAFSA
(Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or TASFA (Texas Application for State Financial
Aid).
Types of Financial Aid for College Students:
- Grants: need-based funds that do not have to be repaid. They are typically awarded by the
college, federal or state government to help cover educational expenses.
- Scholarships: funds awarded to students based on achievements, talents, or other criteria and do
not have to be repaid. They can come from the university, community organizations,
or private donors and are often awarded for academic merit, leadership, or specific
areas of study.
- Student Loans: borrowed funds that must be repaid with interest. They can come from federal, state,
or private lenders and are meant to help cover the cost of attendance.
- Student Employment: allows students to earn money through part-time jobs, often on campus, to help pay
for educational and personal expenses. You can apply for work-study positions through
the Financial Aid Office.
- Exemptions and Waivers: reduce or eliminate certain tuition and fee charges for eligible students, as determined
by state or institutional programs.
- Financial Aid Consortium Programs: A student may be eligible to enter into a Financial Aid Consortium Agreement between
another institution and Ranger College for the purpose of providing federal financial
assistance to the student. Students must be dual enrolled in both institutions.

How Do I Apply For College Financial Aid?
United States Citizens may complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is required for most federal and state financial aid programs and must be
filed each academic year. Some state and federal aid programs are subject to limited
funding, so renewal from year to year is not a guarantee. For undocumented Texas Residents, the Texas Application for Student Financial Aid, (TASFA) application can be used to apply for some state financial aid. To maximize financial
aid opportunity, the FAFSA should be filed as early as possible each year. Only complete the TASFA application if you are a Texas resident and not eligible to
complete the FAFSA.
